Inflammatory Bowel Conditions
Health Care & Disease Control
|
A general term for a group of disorders involving the
gastrointestinal tract. Chronic inflammatory bowel diseases are divided into two
major groups:
Ulcerative Colitis:
Ulcerative Colitis is a form of Colitis that is characterized by chronic
Inflammation and ulceration of the lining of the Colon and Rectum.
Crohn's Disease
Crohn’s Disease is a severe form of colitis that involves chronic
inflammation of any part of the gastrointestinal tract; although it usually
occurs at the end of the Ileum, which is where the small intestine joins the
large intestine.
Inflammatory bowel diseases were rare prior to the 1950's. Since that period
these debilitating disorders have been escalating out of control. Disorders of
digestion are the major reason for hospitalisation in our society.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
A common condition affecting up to 22% of the population with the highest
incidence in females (2:1), characterized by intestinal cramps with constipation
and/or diarrhea. IBS is not a detectable structural disease but the symptoms are
caused by abnormal muscular contractions in the colon. It is a form of Colitis,
although its symptoms do not include Inflammation of the colon.
