"Stop eating butter, cream, milk, cheese and meat, especially beef. Eat
margarine rich in polyunsaturated oils and use vegetable oils such as sunflower and
safflower oils for cooking and salad dressings. This will reduce the incidence of heart
disease in our society". Four decades of
misinformation at best, and gross medical negligence at worst!
The irrefutable truth is, and always has been, that the evidence to support the above was
flawed and that, in my opinion, the National Health & Medical Research Foundation, ably abetted by the
National Heart Foundation and other foundations, stand indicted for the premature death by
heart disease and cancer of countless hundreds of thousands of individuals in our society.
The truth is that margarines and oils, which are partially hydrogenated are proven to
cause heart disease, asthma and cancer at the very least. This evidence was available as
long as fifty years ago.
The Institute hereby challenges the National Heart Foundation and The
National Health & Medical Research Council to prove that margarine and polyunsaturated
oils which have been partially hydrogenated do not cause heart disease, cancer
and asthma and that butter, milk, cheese and beef do! Or
for that matter, let us throw in prawns, lobster, oysters and eggs.
Partially hydrogenated oils contain
Trans-Fatty Acids which are irrefutably proven to
increase the risk of Atherosclerosis by increasing the body's production of
Lipoprotein (a) which is strongly implicated in Atherosclerosis.
They also increase the risk of abnormal blood
clotting by increasing the "stickiness" of
the platelets in blood
cells. Trans-fatty
acids
increase the risk of Ischemic Heart Disease and
increase the risk of a first heart
attack. It has been shown that
individuals who consume more than 6 grams of Trans-Fatty
Acids per day have a 2.44 times greater risk for a first Heart
Attack compared to persons who consume less than 3 grams of Trans-Fatty
Acids per day.
It is also proven that Trans-Fatty
Acids increase the risk of high blood pressure by
increasing blood pressure.
By altering the activity of Liver enzymes, trans-fatty acids increase the
risk of Cancer, and also Obesity and Asthma. See Trans
Fatty Acids
